Nefertiti Gate

Type: Oil on Canvas
When in the center of a modern European capital, one sees a wonderful Egyptian arch, within a serene pond, and other panels behind the arch with Egyptian hieroglyphics, one is overwhelmed, to say the least.
Such is the experience at the Temple de Bode in Madrid situated in Park de Oeste.
The Egyptian arch and monuments were going to be submerged in Aswan Dam. Egyptian Government donated the structures to Spain to express gratitude in help received in saving the temple of Abu Simbel. These were dismantled and rebuilt in Madrid, adding to Madrid’s beauty.

Bridge too Far
Size: 51 cm x 51 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
On the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya is a small, wooded park with a small lake, called “Paradise Lost”. We visited the park during our Kenya visit, after returning from Masai Mara and Lake Naivasha. The park is a popular weekend outing, venue for barbecue parties and such. A small pedestrian track along the lake with this tiny, wooden bridge leads to a small waterfall feeding the lake.
It was quiet, uncrowded and serene when we visited. Our visit happened in 2018. Then Covid came and all travel stopped. Now the beautiful park and the bridge appear far away, beyond reach.

Cherry Blossom
Size: 44 cm x 54 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
This is one of my early works, when I was just learning to paint. My cousin on a visit to central Russia, clicked this picture of a small Russian village church, houses and cherry blossoms. It was quintessentially Russian, and a harbinger of spring, joy, warmth and life. Once upon a time, it would have been impossible to see this picture unless I visited her house. Now with digital photography and internet, we get to see things as they happen.
Russians do not celebrate cherry blossoms like the Japanese do, the celebrations are low key. The photograph does convey the spirit of spring, resurrection, and renewal of life.

Ta Prohm
Size: 66 cm x 46 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
In one corner of the Angkor Park, surrounded by tall trees and hidden from sight, is a ruined temple Ta Prohm. Built by King Jayavarman in 12th century, the temple has been taken over by the forest. It was originally called Raj Vihara and was dedicated to Brahma. Now the temple is in ruins, overgrown by trees. Walls are falling down by the relentless pressure of roots and weight of trunks.
This temple has been restored in part by Archeological Survey of India. It was also the place where, Tomb Raider scenes were shot.
The temple is a magnificent example of the power of Nature and ephemeral nature of human existence.

Serene
Size: 69 cm x 53 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
After a long trek in the dark forest, what will one give for a bit of serenity, sunshine, a refreshing waterfall and a pool to bathe your feet?
This photograph, taken by a friend in the deep forests of Tanzania with blue sky, tall trees with buttress roots, dark woods with the intertwined canopy, yet free of creepers, silence interrupted by chirps of birds and continuous whirr of insects, with the tiny human figure in foreground expresses serenity, as nothing else can.
One is reminded of the famous lines in the poem by Robert Frost, “I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep”. The promise is more often to yourself. And miles and distances can be real or imaginary. But, there is always time for a break, peace and relaxation.

Devgiri
Size: 67 cm x 66 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
A leafless tree in foreground and baby pink tower in the background, as one approaches Devgiri (Daulatabad) fort depicts the ravages of time. Once upon time, a capital of India, Devgiri is now a desolate fort, a haunt of pythons, monitor lizards, and bats.
This fort reminds of Omar’s lines, ‘They say the Lion and the Lizard keep
The Courts where Jamshýd gloried and drank deep:
And Bahrám, that great Hunter--the Wild Ass
Stamps o'er his Head, but he lies fast asleep.”
Devgiri fort is quite close to where I live and is a favorite place to visit. Especially in the early morning hours when there are no tourists, only peacocks, birds and langurs. It has immense potential for sketching, painting, with its myriad buildings, temples, trees, flowers, birds. Definitely artist’s paradise.

Sakura
Size: 82 cm x 66 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
This is the real Sakura. What is more quintessentially Japanese than Mount Fuji and Sakura? Hanami, the art of looking at cherry blossoms is a favorite activity of Japanese, similar to watching rocks grow, and sometimes, drinking tea from an empty tea-cup. The fleeting nature of Sakura, teaches us the frailty of life, importance of change, and importance of enjoying good things while they last.
As the famous Japanese poet, Yosa Busan wrote,
Sakura, Sakura,
They fall in the dreams of
Sleeping beauty.

Spring
Size: 66 cm x 51 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
Driving to Nasik, for my convocation, saw this beautiful Palash ( Flame of the Forest) tree with morning rays of the sun.
“Awake, for morning in the bowl of night
Has flung the stone that put stars to flight
And lo, the hunter of the east has caught,
The sultan’s turret in the noose of light.”
What a wonderful imagination Omar had, to compare morning sunrays to a noose of light, catching objects?
Palash tree flowers in January/February and is harbinger of spring. It sheds all the leaves and one can see only flowers, orange, red, scarlet. Rarely white. It is a beautiful sight, and we would always visit Gautala in the season to catch a glimpse of flowering Palash.
Unseasonal clouds covering dark mountains, give a dark background to the inspiring image of the flowering tree, signifying renewal, rebirth, reincarnation, resurrection.

Blossom Rosa Indica
Size: 46 cm x 36 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
Rose Indica flowers regularly bloom in our garden, and serve as a reminder that all beautiful things fade away eventually. They must be cherished while you can!

Stag
Size: 44 cm x 64 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
Om bhurbhuv swaha. Tatsaviturvarenyam bhargo devasya dheemahi, Dhiyoyonah prachodayat, goes the Gayatri mantra.
Praying to Sun God, we meditate on the glory of that Being who has produced this universe; may She enlighten our minds. It is morning, in the deep forests of Kanha Kisli tiger reserve, a stag turns as he hears something. Is it a tiger, or leopard? Or just a monkey? Probably the photographer’s shutter. Morning rays of the sun warm the forest. The sap is rising, birds are chirping, animals are rustling. All is well with the world.

Burano
Size: 82 cm x 57 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
Everyone knows about Venice and its famous Gondolas. Few know about a scenic island near Venice, with colorful houses and superb sea food. The island of Burano. Murano is famous for its glassworks. Burano is famous for being Burano.
It is small enough that one can walk around it in an hour. A 60 minutes ride by boat and one reaches Burano. All the houses have vibrant colors. Apparently, so they could be seen easily from the sea. Whatever the reason, it makes for a picturesque location.

Wild Flower
Size: 58 cm x 48 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
It is easier to tell a person what life is not, rather than to tell them what it is. A child understands weeds that grow from lack of attention, in a garden. However, it is hard to explain the wild flowers that one gardener calls weeds, and another considers beautiful ground cover.

Back Water
Size: 55 cm x 45 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
Rows of palms, still water, lagoon and a small boat punted along, makes for a memorable image. Kerala is God’s own country, with beautiful green environs, friendly people, excellent sea-food and great hospitality. I heard him singing something. Obviously, did not understand the lyrics. Later on, a maid told me the words. Very meaningful.
I've come so far
From where I've began
It's the sound of the waves
The breeze on my skin
Wish that I could be back
Back in my homeland singing
Thi thi thara thi thi thai
Thi thai thaka thai thai thom
Show me the road
And I'll be right there
I'll do, anything to feel
The wind in my hair
I'll go, far as it takes
And I won't even care

Cross the River
Size: 65 cm x 49 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
Somewhere in Karnataka while we were travelling to Hampi, I came across this simple wooden boat on the banks of the Tungabhadra. Wildflowers were blooming, bees were humming, dragonflies were fluttering over water, no person was visible nearby. It was such a beautiful scene, I quickly sketched it, while everyone grumbled. But it was worth the trouble.

Greyshot arch is a famous bridge/underpass in central park, NewYork. This is a famous location, the site of filming of final sequences of “Cloverfield” starring Michael David and Odette Annable. This arch was built in 1860 by park’s landscaper, Calvert Vaux. it is also the location for ‘Birth’ starring Nicole Kidman. My classmate who is in New York shot this picture. I decided to paint it in a Lavender theme.

Tribute to Van Gogh
Size: 51 cm x 41 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
The highlight of my Europe trip was the visit to D’Orsay museum, which houses masterpieces of impressionist art. Seeing works by Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Seurat, among others.
We spent a day at the museum. Sunflowers by Van Gogh is not in this museum but we saw works like Bedroom in Arles, Church at Auvers, Starry Night and many more. This inspired me to paint a reproduction of Sunflowers by Van Gogh. And here it is.

Solitude
Size: 65 cm x 45 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
In the Himalayan foothills, we stumbled on this picturesque tiny bamboo thatched hut, sitting right on the edge of a deep cliff. It was off our route, at a dead end. As it was summertime, all the mountain tops were bereft of snow and ice. The owner of the hut was probably off with his sheep. We were tired and needed a place to sit, remove backpacks, take off our shoes for a little while, and get back to the trekking path.
My faithful sketchbook came to rescue and I could paint this after coming home.

And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth."

Roses in December
Size: 52 cm x 51 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
While returning from our game drive from Sweetwater Serena, and on the way to Nairobi, my sister took us to see a rose farm on the outskirts. It was something we had not imagined. Huge greenhouses with hundreds of planters with roses and roses. All were for export to Europe. The bad ones were thrown away. An impromptu bouquet was given to me by a worker.
Roses in December also happens to be the title of the autobiography of Shri M.C. Chhagla, who served as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.

Shadows

An English countryside manor captured on a glorious day where the sun shone brightly in the sky and threw deep dusky shadows all over. This painting captures the interplay of colours and shadows that must be seen firsthand to be believed.

Lake Naivasha
Size: 45 cm x 55 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
Lake Naivasha is a large freshwater lake in Kenya, it is home to hippos, flamingos, eagles, cormorants and thousands of other birds. Surrounding forest houses giraffes, and other wild beasts. Water level in lake rises and falls with season. Trees by the lake side are sometimes submerged with loss of all leaves. These skeletons look eerie in the evening. Dark, dusky, gloomy, with blowing hippos in water and ephemeral giraffes roaming around, browsing tall trees.

Imagine the perfect picnic - an idyllic spot, the playful tinkling of a nearby stream, good food and great company. This painting transports me there - in the countryside near my childhood home in Bhor, Maharashtra. Those childhood days are surely worth reliving again and again!

Appalachia
Size: 66 cm x 46 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
Somewhere in the eastern mountains, nestle these two cabins, cut off from civilization, people, traffic, noise, pollution. Almost like the cabin of Henry David Thoreau. The season is fall, trees are turning glorious shades of orange, red brown. Heather is blooming. All is well with the world.

Pratham
Size: 53 cm x 43 cm
Type: Oil on Canvas
This is my first painting ever - with all its imperfections on full display. I'm proud of this painting because it reminds me where I started - and that makes my later paintings all the more fulfilling. I hope it inspires every budding to just pick up the brush and start! Take the leap - make your first imperfect painting - you'll look back on it fondly!
